First Turn

wake up….wake up….let it come…rushing slowly…
Coffee…a latte grande…that’s what she wanted…
It was warm, full daylight, hot and golden, but she was in a space, a place, shaded by a double colonnade of arches rising far above her. Her head spinning, Corinne staggered, clutched her hands together behind her, stared out at the long and heaving blue hide of the ocean. The ocean? A wave hit, spray filling the air, the scent of salt cut with heavy tropical perfume, huge banks of red flowers…oleander…bougainvillea…walk out into the silk stream…
“I thought you said you were going to be here at nine….you’re late.”
I’m dreaming, she thought. Or I’m so drunk I’m hallucinating. She tried to focus on something, anything. The man who had spoken was standing there, watching her. Tall, thick black hair, steel blue eyes. Late?
Had she blacked out? The club…when had she left the club? She didn’t even recall going home, or driving here, wherever here was. But she had to say something, even if it was nothing more than a lucid dream. She'd never had a dream this realistic though...another breaker hit the beach behind her, she could feel the spray against her skin, bare arms and back, birds calling to one another way up in those rafters...and who was this man who thought he knew her?“I’m sorry,” she finally managed. “Did we have an appointment?”

He approached her, one long stride after another, four steps, three. Two. One.
“What are you talking about? You set it up.” Behind him, in that tropical hothouse, another incredible man casually strolled past, golden, leonine. Palm fronds reaching, stretching delicate green fingers through iron grillwork. Now this could not be real.
Sardonic, black velvet voice. Frantic, Corinne struggled to remember, remember anything. Nothing but the delirium and the dancing and then here she was. Just in case it wasn’t a dream…but even the dress…she didn’t even own a dress like this.
So completely off balance she could hardly stay on her feet, Corinne responded with the first thing she could come up with. If she could put him off until she could understand what was happening…“I…I just wondered what you thought…about the appointment…”
He studied her curiously. “Not much. Figured you’d explain when you got here.”
She took a few steps away from the brink, walking into the room, if it was a room. If it was real…a couple at a table in swimsuits…more beautiful people…they weren’t paying any attention to her, but then dream people didn’t. Did they?Taking a wild guess, just in case this was real, somehow, perhaps it had something to do with work, she posed, “Maybe it was the email I got, the letter …”
Although, looking at him, it was almost impossible to believe, no…it was definitely impossible to believe that this man had written her asking for romantic advice.

A woman walked under the arches, deliberately brushing up against him, moving so close she literally put one bare foot on top of his shoe.“Hi Gabe,” she purred, then continued on her way. “Hey there Sofie,” he responded, deep quiet voice, loaded with innuendo, amusement. Well, at least she had a name now, although she was even more positive she’d never met him.
Still smiling, he focused his attention back at her. “All right, what about the letter?”
How long could she draw this out? “Umm…what did you think about what I already told you?”
“It’s not the kind of letter you normally get, but I don’t think it was referring to me. Did you bring a copy with you? I can take another look at it. You know I’ll do what I can.”
And she abruptly realized she didn’t even have her purse. Much less a copy of any phantom letter.
“I need some coffee…I think that’s what I need…”
Humiliated, Corinne asked him quietly, “Can I borrow…I don’t seem to have my purse with me…”
Gabe smiled. “Sure. Get whatever you want. Don’t worry about it. They know me here…but Cori…your credit’s as good as mine, not sure what’s going on with you… I’m going to get in a couple of laps in the pool then I’ll be right with you.”
Dazed, Corinne followed him, walking under a canopy of sheer green silk panels into a long gallery. Emerald pool. More palms and the perfume of a thousand exotic flowers drifted through heated air. Now, if this place was real, she would have seen some kind of review…she'd never read anything about it, anything, not one word anywhere...
Three people sitting at a table…the leonine man who had passed behind Gabe, the sultry woman, and yet another guy from some fantasy photoshoot….
A man seated at another table glared at her, the wind from the ocean blowing strands of his red hair across his face. Hard, challenging eyes. Corinne stepped around him carefully…she had enough vicarious experience through her column to recognize what was going on with the woman he was with. She didn’t know him; she didn’t know her; she didn’t know any of these people.
She started toward the coffee bar, taking a guilty look down at the pool where Gabe had stripped down, then dove into the clear water. Long, clean knife edged dive. God…just some coffee…
“A latte, Gabe said I could put it on his account – “ Corinne began, then stopped. Stunned.
The bartender from the club, the same man, smiling at her, same moon colored eyes. Morpheus. It wasn’t possible. “I think I can do better than that….”
“No! I need to think! I need to think about the letter….”________________________________________

I think I have read this at least ten times already and I am still breathless and captivated. Beth I was immediately drawn into this incredible location. The heat, the salt spray...all of it was right there for me.
This felt like such a dream sequence. All those hot men, beautiful men walking around, Sofie brushing past Gabe...I could feel the heat there.
I can never never say enough about your shots, the scenery, that romantic, tropical location. The angles and expressions blended perfectly with the writing. The depth of your shots was inspired.
Poor Corinne...will she ever figure out where she is and what is happening? There is just so much going on here...I'm rambling...and I could literally comment on each shot not to mention the writing. I love where you took this!
And very curious about the woman with Ryan...
Thank you Gayl!
Sadly, I wasn't able to use the white suit for Gabe since I couldn't get the lot I wanted to work, and ended up going with something more casual. Next time though!
and I didn't see any actual woman with Ryan, did you? Maybe she was hiding behind a plant LOL!
How fun! I used to play this game with my sisters when we were kids. It's so awesome how you guys brought it to a whole new level with machinima!
Morpheus is incredibly sexxx...y. There's something vampire-ish about his skin tone though... am i speculating too much :p? It's so weird cos I feel exactly like Corinne, to the few that know me deep, I'm the reliable and to the rest, loner, freak, geek or dreamer!!! zomg, the coincidence is crazy. The shots were incredible Gayl, so fresh and sharp. especially the shots at the computer. I love her hair too btw.
Beth, the turn was unexpected but a refreshing continuation. The location is so dreamy! like a spa-nirvana of sorts, especially with the beautiful people. Beth and her cool cut photos strike again!
I've started writing smth but I've not started taking shots yet cos I'm still playing with the game (skin downloading is new to me and i've yet to find stuff I want to work with) and waiting for myself to get nightlife (to begin with)---and I'm still toggling my story to get a good take off point such that it'll be gripping enough for people to follow.
I'm so excited to see where this leads to. Corinne must be in such a whirl right now, but albeit a pleasent one with all the sexy men lol. But just cos all of you have a side story don't forget to continue writing your own! Lol.
I really look up to ALL of you guys as mentors cos all of you are incredibly talented! You guys are what got me inspired to write and try something on my own. Soooo mmmm, i may drop the odd technical question or two amongst the pile of compliments if that's alright :p.
loves <3!Chloe
oh and my past comment was for both chapters!
Hi Chloe!
Thanks! This was fun to do, although I originally intended to use another set that just didn't work this time...
And sure you can ask technical questions or any kind of questions!
I really appreciate your great comments!
Well done Beth! That was so awesome, every shot-wow! I love how confused she looked in the shots, as Gabe was walking up to her (I'd think it was a dream too if THAT was walking up to me!) The only bad thing I have to say is now I have to follow! I hope I can keep going without it turning dumb :)
I am still very excited to do this though!
LOL! I need to revise my second comment to say the "implied" woman with Ryan...somehow I don't think it was Landry...hehe
Chloe, looking forward to reading whatever you do when you are ready to post something. I'm sure it will be great. It is interesting that you identify with Cori and as for Morpheus, I don't think he's a vampire...or is he...LOL!
Emily! No way you will turn dumb here. Just run with it anywhere you want to go. It will be so much fun to see where you lead Corinne.
Like I said on Emily's blog, I love all of the authors in this group. Thanks Gayl for getting everybody together to do a collective story. I just can't express enough how much I love yall.
Whew I wouldn't mind being in the dream with Corrine even if I couldn't remember anything. All of the men are HOT!!
Detris
Thank you Detris! What a great compliment! And yes, Gayl had a fabulous idea to do this!
I had to keep chasing the non-hot men out of the place when I was taking shots LOL! Plus a couple who are smoking hot, but I didn't want them there...
The roof on that lot...I'm still not happy with it. I thought of leaving it open, but then everyone freaks out if it rains on them so I resorted to transparent tiles. I wanted some kind of fretwork that looked like iron but couldn't find anything.
Great continuation Beth! you did a wonderful job!
Lovely descriptions!
Poor Corinne! she has no clue at all! :D
Can't wait to read Emily story!
Well done!
It was great to see Gabe, it's always nice to see him :D lol smoking hot as always! :D
Hi Detris! This is so much fun actually. I hope we can do lots of writing exercises or whatever you want to call them. It's nice to change up what you are writing once in awhile and again...so much fun!
Sandy, didn't Beth do a fantastic job here? I am really looking forward to what Emily does. Corinne is getting confused that is for sure.
Thanks Sandy! It was certainly a fun challenge to come up with an idea to follow up on Gayl's great opener, and to leave something for the next writer to pick up on.
I briefly considered building a whole new NB to do this, then decided NOT!!! It would take me til Christmas to finish if I'd attempted that LOL! So I let Gabe step in and play the dream guy role. He does it so well anyway.
Here I am, at last! RL kept me away from the computer most of yesterday, but I am sitting here stunned, my mug of tea firmly in my hand.
Utterly stunning. The writing, the pictures. Gabe. In a tight white sweater.
Your descriptions "The ocean? A wave hit, spray filling the air, the scent of salt cut with heavy tropical perfume, huge banks of red flowers…oleander…bougainvillea…walk out into the silk stream…"
Absolutely wonderful, I am in awe.
That shot of Ryan, his frank expression, glorious!
Loved the shot of Gabe diving in the pool, perfection!
This story could turn out to be quite intriguing, if only I knew what do to!! LOL! Glad Emily is next, I need more time to think...
Great work, beth...and gayl...great idea!!
~~Karen
Thank you Karen! Believe me, I was agonizing over coming up with something after Gayl's intro piece! And finally decided just to have fun with it and see where it went.
I definitely think we can have some fun with this idea. Maybe next time we "draw straws" to see who will start one or we can just start one when the mood strikes and tag someone. There could eventually be a few threads going at once.
There are a few other ideas that will be fun to throw in once in awhile too.
I was listening to "Slide In" by Goldfrapp when I was writing and shooting this...but I don't know any way to connect to it...but music really inspires me when I write.
LOL Fabulous!! That place is the stuff of dreams.....and the menz..!
I literally squeed when I saw Gabe! Such an interesting turn of events and that last few images really said it all. It hit home what was going on - there was a surreal dreamlike quality to this.
Wonderful! Riveting!
anghard! Wow! Thank you! Can't believe you read this -- ok, yes I can -- Gayl had such a fantastic idea, and everything she touches is so good!
I'm so lazy, I decided to just go with what I had and crank it up. Gabe is an easy model under any circumstances...The hardest thing was to come up with another hook.
Again, thank you!
