Darkness faded around Corinne, leaving only the brightness that lit the landscape with its harsh glow. She closed her eyes tight and took a shuddering breath. Gabe was gone and with it, the answers she so desperately sought. The gentle slap of fabric against her bare legs made her open her eyes. Her vision showed her what she had first glimpsed on arrival.
Endless desert, speckled with dead tress that could not survive the ruthless environment. She stretched out her arms and glanced down at the exposed flesh for a moment. She felt no heat, no effects from the wind that still blew at her back nor the sun that shone mercilessly above her.
She straightened her shoulders and began to walk. She had wanted something extraordinary, something to break the monotony of a life that had become routine, predictable. As she walked, her thoughts fell in time with her steps. It had all begun at the club, with Morpheus and his delirium. The closer she came to answers, the more confusion she experienced.
Ahead, the desert began to shimmer and shift. She stopped and waited. Some instinct, some shred of self preservation stayed her steps until the area settled like dust. Morpheus. The very thought of the man had brought him to her.
“Ah, you look radiant my dear.” He smiled warmly at her.
“More tricks Morpheus?” she frowned down at him. He shrugged, unconcerned by her reaction and waved languidly to the empty seat across from him.
“Sit. We have much to talk about.”
Refusal rose to the fore but common sense made her do as he asked.
“You have some explaining to do.” She said bluntly, eyeing the flower arrangement with curiosity. It bloomed, unrepentant in the desert heat. Its fragrance of gardenias and roses.
“The Pandora.” He answered her unspoken question. “It’s resilient, even in the harshest of climates.”
“I’ve never heard of it.” She cupped its petals gently. It was smooth, unblemished.
“It’s a rare breed.”
“Did you bring me all the way here to talk about flowers?”
He chuckled softly, a deep rumble that began at the base of his throat.
“Do you like your adventure, Corinne?” the way he said her name sent shivers down her spine. She was startled at the reaction and concentrated on his question.
“Let’s see … I’ve met several interesting men, men who have made a great impact on my life, travelled naked on horseback through a beautiful land to meet a lover who is as familiar to me as my own breath and been shown a letter by Gabe that makes absolutely no sense to me but I can’t help but feel its importance. What do you think?” she hadn’t meant for her reply to be so curt, but his elusive behaviour made her edgy.
“Ah, so … you have seen the letter.” His lips tilted into a half smile. “But you cannot read it. Not yet, not until you find the box and the man who holds it.”
“The man with the box…” she felt something click into place deep inside of her, that voice that kept calling to her, faint and insistent. Mesmerized by the eyes that looked deep into her own, she heard the distant sound of a melody, its words escaped her, but its tune sung to her soul.
Corinne blinked and turned her head.
“What ..?”
“Have you never seen a piano before my dear? What are they teaching you in that world of yours.”
She frowned, tried to remember what she had almost discovered and shook her head wearily. More games.
“Shall we dance?” his hands appeared before her face. She gazed at it, at the smooth palm, the long fingers, so delicate and inviting. Without a word, she rose and allowed him to lead her towards the piano.
She stilled as his arms slipped around her waist, aware of the slight shift in the landscape. All around her, grey columns rose up to form a guard around them.
“Are you happy Corinne?” his words made her pause.
“Yes.” She replied automatically, feeling the warmness of his flesh against hers. He raised an eyebrow but said nothing. They both knew the true answer to his casual question.
The music roared around them, a symphony of sound that tugged at her, begged her to remember.
“There is something you must know ..” he pulled her close, his breath inches from her own.
“Corinne….” Whatever he had been about to say, it was drowned out by the sudden rolling of dark clouds far above them, the crash of thunder and then the heavens opened, drenching them as they stood together, her ears straining to hear his words.
“What are you painting?” the man craned his neck to see over the woman’s shoulder.
“A dream.” Her whispered reply dropped into the silence like the tolling of a bell.
Somewhere, a melody sounded and the world began to fade.

I was so excited to see this post! Magical, simply magical. She is on the brink of discovering the purpose of her travels and just can't quite grasp it.
When you write, it is like poetry. Every word and every thought is so descriptive and moving I know exactly what Corinne feels and sees.
The music was an inspired accompaniment, haunting, lonely, and yet full of promise.
This was simply brilliant. I don't know how I can follow it...but I will try.
Sorry I got so carried away I forgot to mention your incredible screen caps. You never cease to amaze me with your creativity and eye for the right mood and right angle.
I am sincerely breathless.
Gayl - I have to admit, the writing part wouldn't come to me until after I took the screencaps. I had been trying to write it all week.
I was in there and took that first shot as a test shot really and it sort of led me from there to the end result. Only afterwards did the words start coming as I was looking at the screencaps and listening to that particular song.
I had a vague sense that I wanted a desert scene that had a measure of realism about it, if that makes sense :-)
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and support! I had a lot of fun with this piece and discovered a bit more about who Corinne and Morpheus was.
Eh, I'm probably not making much sense! Hehehehehe.
That should be;
"A measure of surrealism". Damn my fingers!
OMG...I am breathless! Absolutely stunned! It is incredibly beautiful, the desert, which is empty but not apparently threatening, the transitions that simply "happen", just as they do in a dream. And your shots are incredible...
The mysterious box and naming the flowers Pandora -- delightful!
She is detached, as you are when you're dreaming, but not quite, again, exactly like a dream.
I love the last few scenes, when she's painting what she just experienced.
And the symbol for infinity in Morpheus' eyes, inspired, wonderful!
I KNEW you would come up with something out of this world, and you certainly did!
Very magical indeed, stark pictures, love the mood you created. And you deepened the plot in an imaginative way. Your writing, I must say, makes me feel quite inadequate! LOL! Wonderful! Perhaps Morpheus will turn out to be the man of her dreams!
Can I ask a small favour ladies? Gayl, when you are ready to post, can we start a new post page? All these pictures trying to load are doing my head in! LOL!
Wonderful piece Anghard! I really love the atmosphere of the desert, and the music is very deep as well. I also loved the transition of the columns! I could almost hear them coming out of the ground, your descriptions are just so perfect! Brilliant, I loved it! ~Emily
Karen, a new post page would be a good idea. It's taking a LONG time to load now!
anghard, forget to say how much I love the detail with the paint on the floor. And Corinne's dress! And the way you opened picking up the "light" I dropped as a hook with the sun! Just great!
This is a beautiful piece! Are they infinity signs in their eyes? I thought they were hearts.....
I am all about magic and romance and her transitions from one place and time to the next have driven me back to read a series of books I desperately love...the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.
The magic you weave is intoxicating and your screenies are beautiful.
I am loving this and am looking forward to more.
you know what the relationship between morpheus and cori reminds me of? especiallyy so in this episode- like the relationship between V and Evey Hammond in V for Vendetta! Fuelled with mystery but the sense of working to something greater and far more important than Evey/Cori's daily affairs. And the bizarre mutual like for each other that's there but not quite at the same time.
Anghard, this was amazing! I'm blasted away really. Especially the last part, which kind of brings us into another dimension. You're so talented! your shots were ace and your writing incredible! The dessert set was so SO Salvador Dali, super surreal, it really added such good measure to what Cori was going through. KUDOS! I can't wait to see more of your work :)
Beth - Thank you! You know you were the inspiration for naming the flower Pandora. I think in a previous story you mentioned a reference to some greek mythology and it came to mind when I was writing this piece up.
When I was reading the ending to your post, I kept getting the image of a sun that she was maybe seeing so it sort of evolved from there :-)
drewsoltesz - I was wondering about the load times too. I have been experiencing some slight problems with them myself.
Thank you. I wasn't sure if I should have done that with Morpheus but I can't help but think there's more to him than meets the eye :-)
panda_bears1 - Thanks Emily. It was certainly an interesting piece to write for me.
shelby - Thank you for reading the piece Shelby :-) Yes, they are infinity brushes that I downloaded for photoshop.
The Outlander series? I've not heard of them but now I am going to hunt them down. You have me curious and I am always on the market for new authors to read!
Chloe - Thank you for the kind words. Salvador Dali is such an original artist. I remember seeing his work back in high school and being floored by them.
Ah yes, V for Vendetta. I can't remember much of that movie but I think I liked it, I can't be sure.
Gayl's wonderful idea really has me inspired.
Amazing chapter!!
I love your writing, lol this is the first piece I read from you and I loved it!!
Fantastic pictures, really well done!
I also have a feeling that maybe Morpheus will turn to be Corine's man :D!
Great job!
Sandybvv - Thank you for reading! It was a lot of fun to write I can tell you and I have Gayl to thank for that!
